What About Water Conservation

With Arizona naturally being a drought state and also one of the hottest places on Earth it really is no wonder why we all see the commercials to conserve water. I hope I can add in addition to what you have already heard some facts that might cause you to consider some alternative products that help save a little more water so Arizona can have enough for everything that needs it.

The first fact is that even though it appears that one can use as much water as one pleases without running out - it is not at all the case.

The city of Phoenix ’s water supply comes primarily from the Salt River Project (SRP) which brings water by canal and pipeline from the Salt and Verde Rivers, and the Central Arizona Project (CAP)which transports Colorado River water. A small amount of Phoenix ’ supply comes from wells, or groundwater as well.

A small note I would like to include is that summer Monsoon rains do not add much water to our deficit, but Arizona and surrounding states including Mexico rely on good snow pack in the winter to melt and replenish the Colorado River. There is an illusion behind justifying water waste, and it has to do with not understanding that the citizens of Arizona are not allowed to consume all the water that flows through it, this including the Colorado River.

In 1922 an agreement between seven states divided that water from the Colorado River amongst themselves, Mexico also receives some water as well, this agreement is called the Colorado River Compact. In this agreement it shows how much water each state is allowed to receive each year from the Colorado River, this is that table:

This table shows that Arizona is only allow to consume 37.35% of all water that flows through the Colorado River.

It is this reason, that water is especially scarce in Arizona. Although our city government has made good choices on how we are to use our water, it is simply unwise to waste water when conservation methods are so easy to implement.

Outside

About 70% of your total water use occurs outside the home.

Consider desert landscaping and plants that require less water. If you prefer to have a lawn, new hybrid Bermudagrass varieties like Bulls Eye (Bobsod), TifSport and Princess 77 can thrive on about 10% less water than other grasses. Install a "smart" irrigation controller to more efficiently water your landscape. Smart controllers can save about 25% of the water used outdoors by automatically linking the watering schedule to actual weather conditions or moisture at the root level.
Water plants and trees deeply and less frequently. Watering before sunrise reduces the amount of water lost to evaporation.
If you have a pool, reduce evaporation by using a liquid pool cover or installing a pool cover. Using new techniques to remove calcium deposits can eliminate the need to drain your pool.
Use rain gutters to channel rainwater toward your landscape.

Inside

About 30% of your total water use occurs inside the home.

Toilets are the biggest water user in the house (nearly 30%). Switching to high-efficiency toilets (using 1.3 gallons per flush) can save about 15,000-20,000 gallons per year for a family of four.
Water- and energy-efficient front-loading clothes washers use 35-50% less water and about 50% less energy than conventional models.
Fix leaky faucets throughout your home. It's simple, inexpensive, and can save 140 gallons of water per week.
Replace older shower heads if they have been in place for 15 years. Look for models that use two and a half gallons per minute or less - you'll likely be saving three gallons for every minute you shower.
Look for the EPA's WaterSense label when purchasing new sink fixtures. WaterSense-labeled faucets and accessories can reduce a sink's water flow by 30% or more without sacrificing performance.

The Cost of Hard Water

Did you know that investing in a water softener for your home can actually save you money? did you know that adding a softener to your home is actually a green decision? we are aware that any major appliance purchase is a big step, so we would like to leave you with this fact sheet to help you as you consider your decision.
A 5 year study by New Mexico State University found that homes with soft water saved 21% to 29% on the cost of heating water,. A water heater with as little as 1/8" scale added 20% to heating costs.
A study by Purdue University found that clothes last 15% longer when washed in soft water. The colors remain brighter and the fabric feels softer.
According to a study by Ohio State University hard water adds 6 hours per month to cleaning in the average household. Many times hard water spots and streaks require special cleaning products to remove.

A Life Cycle Assessment highlighted in the February 2007 issue of Water Conditioning & Purification Magazine showed a homeowner installing a water softener had the same effect on the environment as removing 1.5 cars from that cities highway.
